In the world of triathlons, no event is more daunting than the Ironman. The lengths of each stage are enough to serve as competitions on their own -- Ironman events start with a 2.4-mile swim, progress to a 112-mile bicycle ride and finish with a 26.2-mile run, equivalent to the distance of a marathon. Athletic novices are not featured in these events -- the Ironman is often approached only by people who are proficient in triathlons and want to test themselves to greater lengths. Successfully completing this race requires support from several pieces of gear and equipment.
Swimming Equipment
The type of suit you wear depends to some degree upon your personal preferences -- a full-body suit might be preferable in colder temperatures, but two-pieces for women and small one-pieces for men are also possible. You will want a head cap to reduce drag and resistance on your head, as well as goggles. Apply an anti-fog spray to the goggles to keep them clear and useful as you heat up and sweat into the goggles.
Cycling Equipment
A bike is an obvious necessity, but you can greatly improve your performance by using a road bike or tri bike, which are built for the rigors of the cycling leg of the race. Wear cycling shorts and a cycling shirt, which will improve comfort and reduce wind resistance. Keep a water bottle and some small amounts of food on hand, and carry spare parts such as tire tubes, along with a multitool for making these repairs and adjustments, along with you. Always wear a helmet when riding and consider sunscreen if you are worried about the sun's harshness on your long ride.
Running Equipment
To deal with the heat and sunlight, you might want to wear a hat and/or sunglasses to minimize their effect on you. Carry a fuel belt or fanny pack filled with energy gels or food bars. You should also carry some water on your body. Socks and a good pair of broken-in running shoes are vital. Carry sunscreen in case you get overwhelmed by the sun.
Other Gear
You might want to bring ibuprofen to combat inflammation as it develops. Have a towel on hand to help wipe off sweat and dry yourself between the swimming and bicycling stages. Always bring a first aid kit to events, and bring a change of clothes for after the race.
