Utilizing the proper body position will allow you to steer the snowboard with ease. Rotating your front knee and hip in a smooth rhythmic motion will change the direction of the snowboard during the turning technique. According to the Snow Professor, keeping your front knee and hip aligned with the snowboard will allow you to maintain balance during high-speed turns. Avoid trying to turn the snowboard with only your shoulders as this can result in torn muscles and painful falls.
Step 1
Bend both knees to a 45-degree angle as you reach a comfortable speed. Rotate your front hip in a fluid motion to initiate the snowboarding turn. Keep your front knee perpendicular to the top of the snowboard as you carve across the riding terrain.
Step 2
Turn your front hip in the opposite direction to adjust the route of your snowboard. Avoid twisting your front knee as this can result in a torn ligament. Rotate your shoulders in the direction of the turn to balance the top and bottom half of your body.
Step 3
Move your front hip perpendicular to the snowboard as you complete the turn. Rotate the snowboard 180 degrees to place your opposite hip in the lead position. Practice the proper hip and knee placement while turning to get comfortable with the switch in riding stance.
