As with carbohydrates and protein, your body has its own unique metabolic process for breaking down fat, working from the time you consume fat to when it is converted into energy or stored as reserves. With normal digestion, it takes approximately 1 hour to process 10 grams of fat. If you ate a 400-calorie meal with 30 g of fat, it could take up to 3 hours to metabolize; if that same meal only contained 4 g of fat, it could take just 30 minutes.

Process

Fat metabolism is a long process that involves multiple internal organs and hormone secretions. Fat molecules cannot be broken down in the stomach and must be metabolized mostly in the small intestines, where they stimulate the release of a hormone that then triggers digestive enzymes from the pancreas to break down the fats. Often, the gallbladder must also secrete bile into the small intestine to help metabolize fat.

Factors

The exact transit time for any nutrient depends in large part on the individual. There are some things you can do to improve metabolism. These include engaging in regular exercise, getting proper hydration and eating regularly to maintain your metabolism. Choose heart-healthy and unprocessed natural fats such as fish, nuts, seeds and seed oils.

Foods

Fat comes not only from obvious sources like oil and butter, but is also hidden in everyday foods like baked goods, potato chips and other snack items. To get a better handle on how much fat you put into your body, read nutrition labels before consuming foods and choose whole foods such as apples, carrots and green leafy vegetables that are fat-free. Asking your body to break down fewer sources of processed fats will help it work more efficiently.

Tips

Excessive amounts fat can slow down your fat-metabolism process. If you want to reduce or eliminate excess fat from your metabolic pathways, consider consuming somewhere on the lower end of the 20 to 35 percent of daily calories U.S. governmental health agencies recommend you get from fat. Replace fatty cooking methods such as frying with boiling, baking or grilling. Reducing fat consumption can help speed up the metabolic time for fat.
