If you have scheduled your toddler for an elective surgery procedure, there is time to prepare him for what is about to occur. While a toddler may not understand the concept of surgery or understand why he is having surgery, he may become upset if he senses you are nervous. Toddlers may also be worried about being away from mom or dad -- even if it is for just a short period of time. From a toddler's point of view, hospitals and doctors may seem scary. Fortunately, there are things you can do to help prepare your toddler for surgery.
Step 1
Talk to your toddler in terms she will understand. Spend only five to 10 minutes explaining your trip to the hospital. Stress the importance of feeling better after having surgery. Use small words and phrases to help communicate the concept of surgery, for example, "sleepy medicine" or "hospital pajamas." Ask your toddler if she understands after you are finished talking.
Step 2
Read children's books about going to the hospital or having surgery. Stories can help paint a picture of what surgery is like and communicate with illustrations and simple language that surgery does not hurt will help your toddler feel better.
Step 3
Give your toddler a toy doctor's kit to play with. Allow your toddler to listen to your heart, take your blood pressure or give you a shot. Show your toddler that the items used in the hospital are nothing to be afraid of.
Step 4
Discuss surgery only a day or two prior to your toddler's procedure. Toddlers do not have a concept of time. Telling your child about surgery just before surgery will give your toddler less time to think or worry about a visit to the hospital.
Step 5
Allow your toddler to make choices. Allow your toddler to pick out a special toy to bring to the hospital and pajamas that he would like to wear while at the hospital.
Step 6
Give your toddler something to look forward to after surgery. Reward your toddler for being strong and brave after surgery by giving him a popsicle, watching a movie or playing his favorite game.
