If your physician is concerned about the loss of range of motion in a joint, especially after surgery, he may prescribe a continuous passive motion machine or a dynamic splint. These devices move the affected joint through a prescribed range of motion at a constant speed over long periods of time. This limits the possibility of scar tissue formation restricting joint motion. Several brands are available--which one you will use depends primarily on physician preference and insurance coverage.
Dynasplint
Dynasplint is an international company that is one of the largest providers of dynamic splints. They produce splints for knees, shoulders, wrists, fingers and jaws and even have a veterinary line. Dynasplint claims the key to their success is the low-load, prolonged-duration stretch (LLPS). They say this LLPS delivers a biological stimulus that create a permanent change in length in connective tissues.
Ultraflex
Pennsylvania-based Ultraflex is another producer of Dynamic Splints. They create, sometimes with the help of certified orthotists, several varieties of splints. From splints for gait abnormalities after a brain injury, to spasticity prevention after spinal cord injury, to post surgical splints to retain range of motion, Ultraflex has a product that can be customized to meet an individual patient's needs.
EMPI Advance
EMPI Advance, a DJO company, is another popular maker of dynamic splints. While pediatric versions are not available, knee, forearm, ankle and wrist splints are available for adults. EMPI emphasizes that advance dynamic splinting aids in the remodeling of tissue after injury. Whereas damaged tissue tends to lay down in a jumbled disorganized pattern, dynamic splinting in conjunction with physical therapy can help tissue to form in a more organized, dense way that is stronger.
Trust Your Physician
While these are three of the most popular brands, there are more companies manufacturing dynamic splints than is possible to list. Your doctor will choose the right splint for you based on your condition. The most important thing to remember as a patient is that splints don't work by themselves. To reap the greatest benefits from your dynamic splint, always use it as your physician prescribes.
