Coenzyme Q10, also called CoQ10 and ubiquinone, is an antioxidant important for energy production in cells. This vitamin-like nutrient is available in certain protein-rich foods, such as organ meats, oily fish and peanuts. You also can buy CoQ10 in supplements, which are purported as useful for treating many health disorders, including high blood pressure.
Blood Pressure Effects
According to MedlinePlus, a website provided by the National Library of Medicine, CoQ10 supplements are "possibly effective" for treating several health conditions, including the lowering of high blood pressure. Taking CoQ10 along with medication to reduce blood pressure may allow your doctor to lower the medication dosage. You might even be able to discontinue using medication, but don't do so without your doctor's recommendation and supervision. Continue monitoring your blood pressure on a regular basis while taking CoQ10.
Isolated Systolic Hypertension
CoQ10 supplements also may be helpful for reducing isolated systolic hypertension, a condition in which only the top number of the blood pressure measurement is too high. Some people with this disorder have experienced a decrease in systolic blood pressure of about 26 percent after taking the supplements for 12 weeks, according to MedlinePlus.
Dosage
For lowering high blood pressure, the typical dosage of 120 to 200 mg of CoQ10 per day is recommended, divided into two doses. For isolated systolic hypertension, a standard dose is 120 mg per day, divided into two doses. However, you may not experience positive effects for four to 12 weeks.
Considerations
While some people benefit from the blood pressure reduction effect of CoQ10 supplements, for others this can be a negative effect. If you have very low blood pressure, for instance, taking CoQ10 supplements could cause your blood pressure to drop too low. Signs of low blood pressure include lightheadedness or dizziness when standing up or when sitting up after lying down, and possibly fainting. In addition, CoQ10 may disrupt blood pressure control during and after an operation. If you have an upcoming surgery, stop taking CoQ10 at least two weeks beforehand, and always make sure your doctors is away of any supplements you are taking.
