I Get Headaches When I Eat Less Food

Food and diet play an important role in physical health. The body requires adequate nutrition for proper functioning. Discomfort, including headaches, can be a sign that the body is in distress. Headaches can be a sign that the body is not receiving proper nutrition or hydration.

Hypoglycemia

Hypoglycemia occurs when sugars in the blood are too low or decrease too rapidly. Limiting food intake, not eating regularly, intense exercise or illness can cause hypoglycemia. Headache, feeling light headed, sweating and weakness are symptoms of hypoglycemia.

Dehydration

Water is required by the body to function properly. Most functions of the body require a certain amount of water. When you lose more water than you ingest and your body does not have enough water to function properly, dehydration occurs. Symptoms of dehydration include fatigue, muscle aches, headache, thirst, dry skin and constipation.

Migraine

Migraine headaches are characterized by pain in one or both sides of the head, disturbance of vision and nausea. Symptoms of migraine headaches can worsen with activity, light or sounds and can make daily activities difficult to complete. The exact cause of migraine headaches is unknown. However, skipping meals or fasting can trigger a migraine in some people.

Tension Headaches

Tension headaches are the most commonly experienced type of headache. Neck and upper back pain or tension may also occur with tension headaches. Causes of tension headaches include stress, decreased sleep and skipping meals.

Relief

Maintaining proper nutrition and hydration can aid in headache prevention and relief. Eat several small, balanced meals throughout the day. Drink water throughout the day to maintain hydration. Be aware of when you feel hungry or thirsty and eat or drink when these sensations occur. Consult a physician if headaches persist or interfere with daily functioning. A nutritionist or doctor can help you decide how much water and food to consume for your body-type and lifestyle.
