Bladder spasms can occur for a variety of reasons. Urinary tract infections, chronic conditions like cystitis and even bladder cancer can cause the bladder to spasm, leading to pain, increased urinary frequency and urgency, and even incontinence. However, you may be able to calm your spasms by incorporating foods into your diet that are less irritating to the sensitive bladder lining.


Cranberry juice is often touted as a remedy for urinary tract infections. However, both cranberries and blueberries can prevent bacteria from clinging to the lining of the bladder, thus preventing infections. By preventing infections, berries also prevent the spasms that accompany them, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. Other berries like blackberries, raspberries and strawberries are also beneficial for preventing bladder spasms.

Vitamin C-Rich Foods

In the treatment of bladder cancer and even in the prevention of it, the Cancer Treatment Centers of America suggests consuming foods high in vitamin C. Vegetables, including spinach, kale, carrots, cabbage, sweet potatoes, and pumpkin, are rich sources of this vitamin. Fruits, including citrus fruits and cantaloupe are also rich sources of this vitamin.

High Fiber Vegetables

Another kind of food that can calm bladder spasms by preventing UTIs are vegetables high in fiber. According to the Southwestern Medical Center, consuming about 4 1/2 cups of high fiber vegetables, like yams, beans, potatoes and squash, can maintain proper digestion, prevent constipation and unnecessary bladder pressure.

Whole Grains

Whole grains are another high fiber food that are good for the bladder. According to the Cancer Treatment Centers of America, those with spasms due to bladder cancer or UTIs can benefit from whole grains from sources like wild rice, quinoa, oats, whole wheat, and brown rice.
