Redness of the face, more commonly known as rosacea, may be brought on by several factors. According to the National Rosacea Society, sun exposure is a trigger for 61 percent of people who suffer from this condition. Other common environmental triggers include hot weather, cold weather and wind. Some foods may be helpful in treating your rosacea, although you should always clear the use of nutritional therapies with your doctor beforehand.

Rosacea

Rosacea, a chronic condition characterized by facial redness, pimples and the appearance of blood vessels on your nose and cheeks, has no known cause. The Family Doctor website states that rosacea-related symptoms -- easy blushing, bloodshot eyes, a red and bulbous nose -- usually manifest in people between the ages of 30 and 60, and this condition tends to be more severe in men. Rosacea is particularly common among fair-skinned people.

A Proper Diet

A proper diet for rosacea involves certain dietary inclusions and exclusions. Consuming a diet high in raw vegetables and grains may be particularly helpful for treating this condition, notes nutrition researcher Phyllis A. Balch, author of "Prescription for Nutritional Healing." Primrose oil, kelp and foods containing significant amounts of B-vitamins, zinc and selenium may also be helpful. Consider avoiding coffee, spicy foods, alcohol and foods containing refined sugar and trans-fatty acids.

A Useful Food

Primrose oil, also known as evening primrose oil, may be one of the most useful foods in treating your rosacea. Primrose oil, notes the University of Maryland Medical Center, has historically been used for treating various skin conditions, including skin redness, swelling, crusting and itching. Primrose oil contains linoleic acid, which is a substance skin requires for optimal health. Primrose oil has also traditionally been used in treating allergies, premenstrual syndrome, arthritis and other ailments.

Additional Information

Rosacea is an often difficult condition to treat. In most cases, rosacea may best be treated using a combination of conventional medical and alternative treatment measures, including diet and nutritional therapy. The use of certain foods in treating your rosacea does not guarantee a cure for your problem or even a beneficial health outcome. Certain foods may not be appropriate for you or your condition. Ask your doctor about the merits, drawbacks and limitations of natural therapies before using this health approach.
