Curving the ball is a vital part of football, which is known in the United States as soccer. The football -- or soccer ball -- can be curved for the purposes of passing to a teammate, shooting the ball on goal, or getting the ball out of the defensive zone and into the other half of the field. Football players quickly realize they can put more spin on the ball and therefore curve it more when they use the inside or outside of their foot instead of the toe.

Step 1

Run hard to the ball when you are attempting to hit a curving shot on net. If you are right-footed, plant your left foot even with the ball and then come across with the inside of your right foot. This will impart a right-to-left spin on the ball, causing it to curve to the kicker's left. This is an ideal shot to use if the goalkeeper is playing close to the near post when you are to his left and you want to send the ball toward the far post.

Step 2

Curve the ball to the right by hitting the ball with the outside portion of your right foot. Run at the ball and plant your left foot about 2 feet from the ball. Bring your right foot through the ball, hitting the part of the ball that is closest to you with the outside portion of your foot. This will impart a left-to-right spin that will cause the ball to curve to the right. This will shock the defense and will allow you to hit an open teammate with an accurate pass.

Step 3

Strike the ball near the bottom whether you are trying to curve it left or right. You want the ball to move sharply and on a line after you make contract. You want full extension with your leg and you don't want to stop short after contact. This will force the ball up in the air and you will lose power and accuracy.
