Arginine AKG is product made from arginine and alpha-ketoglutarate. Arginine is an amino acid and alpha-ketoglutarate is a substance that forms naturally in your body and is involved in a chemical reaction that supplies energy. Speak to your doctor before taking any dietary supplements, including arginine AKG.
Arginine
Arginine is an amino acid that's needed to build proteins and can be used to make other amino acids, and it also helps your body eliminate excess ammonia, which can become toxic. Arginine may help to improve immune system function and increase levels of growth hormone and insulin. Dietary sources of arginine include meats, eggs, poultry, fish and dairy products.
Nitric Oxide
Arginine is a precursor for a substance called nitric oxide that triggers dilation of blood vessels. Using arginine to increase nitric oxide levels may enhance blood flow and reduce blood pressure. According to a study published in 2009 in "Human & Experimental Toxicology," increasing nitric oxide is thought by some athletes increase the delivery of oxygen and nutrients to the muscles during exercise, which would be beneficial during heavy weight training.
Arginine AKG Supplements
Arginine apha-ketoglutarate supplements may increase strength, at least according to a study published in 2006 in "Nutrition." Researchers reported that male athletes who took 20 g arginine AKG for eight weeks showed greater improvements in specific strength tests when compared to a placebo group, but did not change body composition or aerobic capacity.
Precautions
Arginine AKG appeared to be safe in the study published in "Nutrition." The study in "Human & Experimental Toxicology" discussed a possible association between Arginine AKG and adverse cardiovascular effects in three men. However, the researchers did not establish the supplements as the cause for the adverse effects. Dietary supplements are not regulated for effectiveness and arginine AKG does not appear to be well-researched, so do not take arginine AKG without speaking to your doctor first.
