Juniper berries have been used around the world for hundreds of years to treat urinary track infections, or UTIs, and other ailments. According to the Langone Medical Center at New York University, American herbalists have used juniper to treat urinary tract infections since the 19th century. Juniper is an evergreen tree that grows mainly in Europe. The dark, hard scales surrounding the cones of the tree are known as berries. The berries are also used as a flavoring agent for gin, an alcoholic beverage. Always consult with your physician before you use any supplements.

Active Ingredient

The active ingredient in juniper appears to be terpinen-4-ol, an essential oil that may aid in urine production. Essential oils, also known as complex oils or volatile oils, are concentrated, water repelling, plant based oils. It is not essential from a medical standpoint but rather because it retains essential properties from the plant.

Effectiveness of Juniper Berries

While there is much anecdotal evidence regarding the effectiveness of juniper berries in treating UTIs, there is little scientific research to confirm it. The University of California -- San Diego gives juniper berries a one-star rating for its effectiveness, signifying an herb that "is primarily supported by traditional use, or the herb or supplement has little scientific support and/or minimal health benefit." According to an article published in the July-December issue of "Pharmacognosy Reviews," the juniper berry "increases production of digestive fluids that assist in absorption as well as relieves pain" and "is often used as an antiseptic, diuretic, and stimulant."

Dosage

Juniper berry is usually administered as a tea. Add a cup of water to 1 tbsp. or 5 g of juniper berries. Juniper berries can also be taken in tablet format, 1 to 2 g three times per day.

UTI Symptoms

The symptoms of a UTI include frequent urination or the sudden urge to urinate. Often, you may also experience a burning sensation while urinating or the urge to urinate even after emptying your bladder. You may also have pain in your pelvic area or back pain. The infection may also manifest as a fever, accompanied by chills or nausea.

Warning

Left untreated, a UTI can turn into a kidney infection and eventually kidney failure. Do not use juniper if you experience chronic UTIs. Chronic UTIs may be symptomatic of a more serious condition. Juniper may interact with certain medications, especially diuretics. Do not take juniper if you are currently taking lithium. If you are taking other medication or are pregnant or nursing, consult with your pharmacist or physician before taking juniper.
