1. Stance and Grip
The putting stance basics are relatively simple. Make sure to balance your weight equally on both feet, with your feet roughly shoulder width apart. Then point the toes straight ahead with your knees slightly bent and enough distance between you and the ball to stroke the putter comfortably. The most popular grip in putting is the overlapping grip in which you first place the left hand on the grip of the putter and place the right just beneath it. Interlace the two by lifting the index finger of the left hand, and put it over the right hand. Like most things in golf, it is about control and comfort.
2. Go the Distance
The distance and course condition are the determining factors when your determine swing length and force. This is perhaps the most difficult part of putting. The first objective of the swing is to get flush and even contact between the ball and putter. However, swing speed determines just how close the put comes to the hole. Generally, you want to use the exact same motion for every put, the only thing that changes is how far and fast you bring the putter through this consistent swing.
3. Don't Lose Your Head
It is common for a person to want to lift his head and watch the golf ball after making contact on the put, but resist this urge and keep your head down until you finish the putting stroke. If your head comes up too quickly it can throw off the motion of the swing and the accuracy of the put.
4. Steady Stroke
A shaky putting stroke can send the golf ball skirting off the green. To stay calm before a putt you need to develop a repeatable routine that makes you comfortable and relaxes the body. Try taking a deep breath and then exhale before addressing the ball. Visualization is another good way to relax before a putt. Picture the ideal putt in your mind just before calmly tapping the golf ball.
5. To Each His Own
There are no universal magic techniques in golf. There are fundamental tips that apply to almost everyone, but the perfect putting stroke is the one that works for you. You find this after hours and hours of practice and a lot of trial and error. There also many types of putting tools and styles that you can try, such as using the belly putter instead of a traditional one. Just experiment until you find what feels good and gets the best result.
