Quick weight loss diets, such as the 3-day grapefruit diet, are appealing. You hope to get rid of unwanted pounds in a short time, even if it means exerting a lot of willpower for a few days. There are a couple of problems with the 3-day grapefruit diet, which is also called the grapefruit and egg diet. Firs of all, it does not work well. If you do lose a little weight, you will probably gain it right back. Second, the 3-day grapefruit and similar diets are so restrictive they don't provide your body with the nutrition it needs.
Description
The 3-day grapefruit is a shortened version of a 12-day grapefruit diet that has been around for many years. According to promoters, grapefruit supposedly contains a fat-burning enzyme that promotes weight loss. However, there is no evidence that grapefruit has any such properties. With either grapefruit diet, you are supposed to eat grapefruit at every meal and follow a low-calorie menu. Claims have been made that the grapefruit diets are associated with leading hospitals, such as Mayo Clinic. However, the grapefruit diet is not endorsed by Mayo Clinic or other health care institution.
Meal Plan
The menu for the 3-day grapefruit diet is the same for each day. You eat one-half of a grapefruit or drink an 8 oz. glass of grapefruit juice with every meal. You can have coffee or tea with each meal, but no sugar or milk. Breakfast consists of one egg and one slice of whole-wheat toast with no butter in addition to the grapefruit. Lunch is a mixed salad or steamed vegetables. You may use 1 tbsp. olive or flaxseed oil with lemon juice as salad dressing. Dinner is made up of steamed vegetables, a mixed salad with lemon juice but no oil and 4 oz. of any meat, poultry or fish. You may have coffee or tea between meals and a snack or two such as two egg whites, an apple or a slice of whole-wheat toast with no butter.
Considerations
Grapefruit is a healthy addition to your daily menu. It is rich in vitamin C, fiber and natural carbohydrates. However, attempting to follow an excessively restrictive grapefruit-based diet is not a healthy choice. The 3-day grapefruit diet provides too few calories for adequate nutrition. There are no dairy products and the diet includes little protein or carbohydrates Because of the low calories, you may see some weight loss. However, in most cases, any weight loss is due to water weight and returns as soon as you go off the diet.
Healthy Weight Loss
You don't have to starve yourself with the 3-day grapefruit diet to lose weight. A good weight reduction program is built around a balanced menu with a mix of foods that provide adequate nutrition and reduced caloric intake. For example, Mayo Clinic really does have a diet program based on the well-known food pyramid. The pyramid is adapted for weight loss and features reduced carbohydrates and unlimited fruits and vegetables as part of the menu. Other good choices include Weight Watchers, the Mediterranean Diet and the South Beach Diet. You should include regular exercise as part of any weight-loss program.
