Thyroid Function
Your thyroid gland controls the rate at which your body uses energy. It produces two primary hormones known as T3 and T4. Your pituitary gland, which is pea-sized and sits at the base of your brain, controls thyroid hormone output. When your thyroid produces too little hormone, it is called hypothyroidism. Hashimoto's disease, an autoimmune condition, is the most common cause of hypothyroidism. Synthroid
Your health care provider generally prescribes Synthroid when your thyroid is producing too little hormone. Synthroid contains a synthetic form of one of the two primary hormones your thyroid makes, called thyroxine, or T4. The synthetic form is called levothyroxine. While taking Synthroid, your doctor will monitor your thyroid levels closely because too much can cause hyperthyroidism -- too much thyroid hormone. Hyperthyroidism can cause restlessness, frequent bowel movements, difficulty concentrating, rapid heartbeat and hair loss.
Bladder Wrack
Bladder wrack is a type of seaweed. It is used medicinally for a wide range of issues including constipation, joint pain, digestive issues and underactive thyroid, according to Medline Plus. Bladder wrack is iodine-rich. Your thyroid uses iodine together with the amino acid tyrosine to make thyroid hormones. Bladder wrack can stimulate your thyroid because of this. Do not take bladder wrack if you are taking Synthroid because it can cause hyperthyroidism, according to Medline Plus.
Precautions
Balanced thyroid hormones promote health. Any supplement or herb containing iodine can interfere with your thyroid treatment if you are taking Synthroid. This can worsen or complicate your condition. Kelp is another iodine-rich seaweed to avoid while you are taking Synthroid. Do not take any herbs or supplements without your doctor's consent if you are taking Synthroid.
