Dr. Melissa Hershberg is a former national gymnast and medical doctor living in Canada. Her book, "The Rebel Diet" discusses her experience with dieting as a doctor and athlete. The rebel diet system purports to break all of the normal dieting rules to show you the most effective way to lose weight. Further, Hershberg claims that by learning how to eat everything in the right proportions and variation, you will maintain satiety or fullness throughout the day, preventing you from having a desire to eat unhealthy foods.
The Rebel Diet Manifesto
Hershberg states that the central premise of this diet is that you do not have to achieve perfection to have success with this diet and lose weight. According to Hershberg, this diet allows you to "eat, cheat and defeat your battle against weight loss." Further, the approach used by many diets will not work in the long-term because of the restrictive nature of the diets. Hershberg believes that you cannot abstain forever from the foods that you love to eat. Therefore, she has developed an approach to dieting that minimizes the cravings that you have and deals with these cravings by taking a realistic, long-term approach.
Part One
You may have adopted traditional dieting rules into your lifestyle thinking that these rules will allow you to lose weight. In part one of her book, Hershberg teaches you how to break some of the traditional dieting rules that prevent you from eating fats, sugars, alcohols, carbs and coffees. According to Hershberg, if you follow the direction on how and how much of these and other forbidden items you consume, you can lose weight successfully without completely eliminating these items from your diet.
Part Two
In part two of the rebel diet, Hershberg teaches you how to shop for the right products and implement your new diet. Hershberg provides detailed information about what kinds of items to buy and why you should buy these items. Additionally, she introduces "try it items." According to Hershberg, these items can replace unhealthy food products you currently eat. Additionally during this part of the diet, you learn about new types of food items such as the natural sweeteners Erythritol and FOS.
Part Three
Part three of the Rebel Diet puts everything you have learned together. In this portion of the diet, you learn how to eat "rebel friendly" foods at restaurants and prepare and cook your own healthy meals. Hershberg offers meal plans for breakfast, lunch, snacks and diner. These meal plans purport to eliminate many of the psychological barriers people currently encounter when trying to diet.
