When you join 24 Hour Fitness, you encounter one mandatory assessment, a second highly recommended assessment, and a third assessment if you choose to work with a personal trainer. The mandatory assessment is a questionnaire intended to find out if you have or have had certain health conditions. The second assessment requires your doctor's input to make sure you are healthy enough for workouts at 24 Hour Fitness. Finally, if you choose to work with a personal trainer at 24 Hour Fitness, the trainer assesses your specific, needs and limitations to develop an individualized workout routine for you.
Membership Questionnaire
When you apply for membership at 24 Hour Fitness, you're given a questionnaire to complete. It asks, for example, whether you suffer from chest pain, if you have had a heart attack, if you have fallen more than twice in the past 12 months, if you have lost 10 lb. or more in the past six months, whether you suffer from shortness of breath and whether you have fractured your hip or spine.
Doctor's Orders
24 Hour Fitness states, "Before beginning your fitness plan, speak with your doctor about any limitations on your physical activity and for suggestions to fit with your health problem." This is the second level of screening and assessment, and it places the responsibility on the new member to consult his doctor. 24 Hour Fitness also states that you should know your health history, especially any conditions or illnesses that might not be conducive to vigorous exercise.
Personal Trainer
If you decide to employ a personal trainer at 24 Hour Fitness, the trainer "will begin by identifying your goals and creating a personalized fitness plan." The plan usually includes the amount of weights you will be lifting as well as the number of repetitions, how long to rest between lifting, what cardio machines are best for you and how to avoid injuries.
Assessment and Results
One member, Debbie C., recounts her experience with Patrick, her personal trainer. The first time they got together, "he did a complete assessment and pinpointed a number of areas that needed work because they were tight and others because they were weak." The fitness plan focused on improving Debbie's balance and strengthening her core muscles. They met twice per week for workouts and Debbie C. also received a routine to do when she worked out on her own.
