5 Things You Need to Know About Reducing Stress

1. Signs of Stress

Normal signs of stress are fine, signs like a little nervousness before a big event, concern about passing a test or paying a bill. The problem stress signs are the ones that incapacitate you, cause health problems or that are chronic. Professionals have long lists of these signs, but a few are grinding of teeth, continued loss of sleep, breathing problems, overeating, a depressed immune system, extreme irritability or anger.

2. Stop Stress in Its Tracks

Recognize stress for what it is and then move into action to stop it in its tracks. There are three things you can do immediately. 1) If you need to speak at all, speak slowly and kindly to those around you. 2) Be aware of your breath. Follow your breath and breathe deeply. 3) Repeat an uplifting mantra or affirmation not only in your head, but out loud if possible. The power of the spoken word in mantras and prayer is vital, especially for the Western mind that is prone to lack of discipline, busy-ness and distraction. Speaking instead of simply meditating or silent prayer anchors the meditation in the physical.

3. Sleeping Beauty Knew No Stress

Our minds and emotions are a direct reflection of the health and state of our bodies. If we are tired and worn out, we will suffer. Medics know that lack of sleep and working at night can cause chronic health problems. Do whatever you need to do, even if it means rearranging your bedroom or your schedule, to make sure you get the sleep your body needs.

4. Healthy Food for a Healthy Mood

People overlook the power of food to work mighty change in our world. In three days of eating right, meaning you cut out sugar, refined flour and junk food, you can feel like a new person. There are a lot of different opinions, diets and ideas about what is the best food for health. It is a study worth the time and effort. However, you can begin with the simple things you know: cut out chemicals, drink good water, chew well, eat organic as much as possible and buy only free-range, no-hormone meats.

5. Run the Stress Away

Get on an exercise program. Find an exercise routine that is fun and comfortable for you, and do it every day or almost every day. Swim, walk, run or do yoga, Pilates or dance. Get the body moving. You will feel better and stronger and will be better able to fend off problems and stress. You will also have that sense of satisfaction and accomplishment that you are disciplined and doing something that is good for you.
