The purpose of cutting a banana with string is to give the illusion that the banana is cut into slices while still inside of the peel. This can be used as a magic trick or a way to add interest to a lunch or snack for your children. According to Columbia College Chicago, a single banana contains 15 percent of vitamin C, 11 percent potassium and 16 percent dietary fiber needed each day. Potassium nitrate, the kind found in bananas, can reduce hypertension similarly as potassium chloride. Potassium chloride must be consumed as a dietary supplement, but bananas do not.

Step 1

Find a needle that is as long as the banana is wide.

Step 2

Thread the needle. You do not have to tie the ends of the thread.

Step 3

Stick the needle into one of the ridges along the side of the banana.

Step 4

Push the needle through the banana, keeping the needle as close to the peel as possible, and out the other side of the banana. This should place the exit hole 1 to 2 inches from the entry hole. This helps mark the original entry hole, because you will have the thread sticking out of it.

Step 5

Repeat the process by pushing the needle back through the exit hole you just created. Again, keep the needle as close to the peel as possible and push the needle out the other side of the banana 1 to 2 inches away from the previous hole. Repeat this process around the banana until the needle exits the original entry hole. When you are finished the needle will come out of the hole that has the thread sticking out of it -- the first hole created. The needle and thread will be sticking out of the same hole. The object here is to wrap the thread around the banana, as close to the peel as possible, and cut the banana inside the peel.

Step 6

Take the needle and thread and pull them simultaneously to cut the banana inside the peel. The thread will come out of the hole and the banana will be cut inside the peel.

Step 7

Determine how big the slices will be and continue the process down the banana.

Tips and Warnings

  • The banana peel is fibrous and will cover up the holes. You will see small brown dots on the banana, but they will look natural.
