Cumin is a spice used in many Indian dishes and is one of the signature flavors in North American chili. Cumin is actually the dried seed of an herb called cuminum cyminum that is a member of the parsley family. Cumin seeds are yellowish-brown in appearance and have a distinct aroma. You can enjoy cumin seeds added to dishes whole, or ground up into a fine powder.

Step 1

Toss a handful of cumin seeds into a dry skillet over medium heat.

Step 2

Shake the pan back and forth to move the seeds around the skillet until you can smell the aroma of cumin. This should take less than 10 seconds.

Step 3

Remove the skillet form the heat and dump the seeds onto a plate once you smell the cumin.

Step 4

Sprinkle toasted cumin seeds in soups or on top of salads.

Step 5

Mix the cumin seeds in with the dough ingredients to make regular bread or flat bread.

Step 6

Grind the toasted seeds in a coffee grinder until they're in powdered form and add it to chili, soup or another sauce.

Step 7

Coat a piece of fish, such as tuna, with ground cumin seeds and sear the fish in a skillet in olive oil over medium heat.
