Constipation is a fairly common condition that can cause unpleasant intestinal pain, gas and bloating. While some might reach for laxatives or stool softeners as a solution, others opt for a more natural approach that involves making lifestyle changes. Supplementing with acidophilus may be one such approach for easing constipation and preventing its reoccurrence.

About Acidophilus

Acidophilus is typically referred to as Lactobacillus acidophilus and works by promoting proper digestion through the production and proliferation of healthy bacteria in the gut. It's available in capsule or supplement form, but it is also included in yogurt, making it simple to add to your diet.

Constipation

Constipation is characterized by an inability to have regular bowel movements with a frequency of at least three per week. Accompanying symptoms include bloating, gas and abdominal pain. Constipation can occur due to being ill, taking certain medications like pain relievers, being inactive, failing to drink enough water or having a bowel disorder like irritable bowel syndrome, the University of Maryland Medical Center says.

Function

When the natural balance of bacteria in the gut gets disturbed either through illness or antibiotics use, the results can include stomach upset, diarrhea and constipation. Taking acidophilus regularly can restore this good bacteria to your gut, relieve constipation and prevent it from coming back, according to MotherNature.com.

Research

To aid in proper digestion, relieve constipation and prevent it from coming back, you may wish to take between 5 and 10 billion colony-forming units of Lactobacillus acidophilus, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. Those with IBS can also benefit from this as it may relieve general gastrointestinal upset as well.
