Aricept, brand name for donepezil, is in a class of medications called acetycholinesterase inhibitors. Aricept is used to treat mild, moderate and severe Alzheimer's disease, according to Aricept's official website, Aricept.com. Aricept works by preventing the breakdown of acetycholine, a brain neurotransmitter that is important for memory and learning. People with Alzheimer's disease have lower levels of acetylcholine. If you have a history of peptic ulcers or gastrointestinal bleeding, inform your doctor before taking Aricept.

Peptic Ulcers

Peptic ulcers are open sores in the lining of your stomach and upper part of the small intestine called duodenum. Avoid taking Aricept if you have active peptic ulcers. Aricept increases secretion of stomach acid which may worsen existing peptic ulcers. If you have a history of peptic ulcers and gastrointestinal bleeding, inform your doctor. The doctor may prescribe a lower dose of Aricept and monitor you closely. The doctor may also monitor if you are also receiving concurrent nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.

Stomach Ulcers Symptoms

When taking Aricept, beware of symptoms of peptic ulcers so that you can seek early treatment. Symptoms of peptic ulcers include burning or gnawing pain, abdominal pain that is often relieved by eating, loss of appetite, nausea and unintentional weight loss, according to Mayo Clinic. Stop taking Aricept and call your doctor if you experience sudden sharp stomach pains, bloody or black stool, coughing up blood or vomits that looks like coffee grounds.

Aricept Administration

Aricept is available in form of regular tablets and orally disintegrating tablets. Aricept is usually taken in the evening, just prior to bedtime. If you have a history of peptic ulcers, take Aricept with food to avoid stomach irritation. Avoid crushing, splitting or chewing Aricept tablets. Swallow regular tablets with a full glass of water. Place the orally disintegrating tablets on your tongue and allow them to dissolve. Do not take more tablets than prescribed.

Side Effects of Aricept

When taking Aricept, you may experience common side effects such as loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea,unintentional weight loss, weakness, headache, dizziness, drowsiness, increased urination, insomnia, muscle cramps and joint pain, according to Drugs.com. Contact your doctor if these side effects persist or worsen. Seek immediate medical attention if you develop chest pains, breathing problems, hives and swelling of the face and tongue.
