Ptosis, or drooping eyelid, can be caused by weakness of the eyelid muscles, looseness of the upper eyelid skin, or damage to the nerves that control your eyelid muscles. It can be hereditary or part of the normal aging process. You might be at risk for ptosis if you have diabetes, cancer, an eye disease or a brain tumor. It can interfere with your vision and increase eyelid muscle tearing. You can help reduce the effects of ptosis by practicing eye exercises.

Eye Gazing

Step 1

This exercise helps improve your vision, aids your concentration and addresses diseases of the eyes. Sit on the floor in an upright position.

Step 2

Keep your eyes open and stare at a distant object.

Step 3

Keep your eyes fixed on the object, without blinking, until tears flow from your eyes.

Eye Rotation

Step 1

Open your eyes.

Step 2

Keep your eyes open while you move your eyeballs up and down.

Step 3

Complete exercise 10 to 12 times without blinking.

Concentration or Pranayama

Step 1

This exercise helps you practice concentration while maintaining a steady gaze.

Step 2

Concentrate on looking at the tip of your nose or on the space between your eyebrows. The point between your eyebrows is called the third eye center or ajna chakra.

Step 3

Focus on this point for four counts.

Tips and Warnings

  • Keep your eye movements steady and relaxed. Breathe deeply while performing the eye exercises.
  • Do not strain your eyes.
