If you are a male with visible breasts -- also called "man boobs" -- but are not overweight, you may have a hormonal condition called gynecomastia. With gynecomastia, no amount of working out will remove the extra tissue on your chest because it is actually the same tissue present in women's breasts. Men who have this condition can reduce the appearance of the breasts with special clothing but to completely lose them, they need to seek medical intervention.
Step 1
Consult your physician to determine whether you have gynecomastia and the possible cause. Gynecomastia is primarily hormonal in nature, and the underlying cause could be anything from a condition that impairs testosterone production to something that has caused you to create more estrogen than normal. Getting a diagnosis and cause will determine the best course of treatment.
Step 2
Follow the treatment plan prescribed by your physician. Your doctor may prescribe medications that shrink breast tissue, such as tamoxifen or raloxifene. He may also prescribe medications to balance your hormones.
Step 3
Wear compression garments to further diminish the size of your chest. Over time, if treatment is successful, you may be able to go without these garments.
Step 4
Discuss the possibility of surgery, such as liposuction or a mastectomy with chest reconstruction, with your doctor if you prefer not to take medication or if the medication is ineffective.
