How to Choose a Snowboard's Waist Width

The waist width on a snowboard is the narrowest point of the board, between the tip and tail. Waist widths vary depending on the size and design of the board. Choosing the correct waist width ensures that you have proper control of your board and avoid toe and heel drag. The easiest way to choose a waist width is to use a sizing chart specific to that board, based on the size of your boots. You can also choose the waist width by trying the board in the store.

Step 1

Wear your snowboarding boots. It is important that you test the waist width with your boots on.

Step 2

Select the board you wish to test based on your level and use patterns. Boards with narrow waists are easier to turn and suitable for novice riders. Boards with wider waists have more stability, but do not turn as easily and are better for more experienced riders.

Step 3

Place the board face up on a carpeted floor. This will prevent scratching or other damage.

Step 4

Step onto the waist of the board with your boots on. Your toes and heels can be close, but should not extend over the edge of the waist. The closer your toes are to the edge, the better control you'll have over the board. If your toes extend over the edge, the waist is too narrow.
