Apple cider vinegar is commonly cited as a helpful supplement in various home remedies. Everything from diabetes to weight loss to indigestion can supposedly benefit from its use. However, use of this home remedy does carry with it some disadvantages. If you have a health problem, you should always see a doctor as your first course of treatment.
Drug Interactions
Consuming apple cider vinegar can cause some drug interactions, especially if you consume more than is required for cooking. According to eMedTV, you shouldn't consume a lot of apple cider vinegar if you take diuretics, insulin or Digoxin. This combination could result in a decreased level of potassium in the blood, which could be dangerous.
Acid Content
Apple cider vinegar by its very nature is highly acidic. If you take it regularly, you could cause stomach issues including indigestion and even ulcers. If you already have these conditions, apple cider vinegar could make them worse, according to MayoClinic.com.
Lack of Evidence
Another problem with apple cider vinegar is the general lack of evidence in regard to its health benefits. As of the time of publication, there is no concrete scientific evidence indicating apple cider vinegar is helpful in the prevention or treatment of any medical condition.
Side Effects
Consuming apple cider vinegar could also cause unpleasant side effects. Some possibilities include difficulty breathing, facial swelling, pain in the throat and hives, according to eMedTV. If you experience any negative effects, seek medical care immediately.
