Muscle Milk is a line of nutritional supplements made by the company Cytosport. It features powders, pre-mixed drinks and bars that all contain a blend of protein from multiple sources, functional fats, low-sugar carbs, and added vitamins and minerals. The powder form of Muscle Milk comes in 20 flavors. You can mix the powders into milk or water, or blend with fruit to create a high-calorie smoothie.

Flavors

Not all flavors of Muscle Milk are suited for a fruit smoothie. Vanilla crème, cake batter and white chocolate mousse could all serve as a neutral base for any type of fruit. Strawberries and crème, banana crème, orange crème, blueberries and crème, peach mango, strawberry banana and pineapple banana are all flavors that are also good for fruit smoothies.

Ingredients

In addition to the Muscle Milk powder, a fruit smoothie might include any combination of cow's, soy, nut or rice milk, fresh or frozen fruit, juice and yogurt. Adding frozen fruit, especially bananas, adds a creamy texture. While Muscle Milk contains a number of added vitamins and minerals, you could add flaxseed oil or meal to boost the omega-3 fatty acid content of your smoothie.

Muscle Milk contains 32 g of protein per two-scoop serving. Adding protein to your diet can help facilitate muscle retention and growth, especially when consumed regularly after strength training. Two scoops of Muscle Milk blended into a smoothie with two cups of milk and fruit contains between 800 and 1,000 calories. If you are trying to gain weight, adding this smoothie to your diet could elicit a 1 1/2 to 2 lb. per week weight gain, provided you are already eating enough calories to maintain your weight. Adding fruit and milk to Muscle Milk might make it taste better and add extra nutrients.

Considerations

Muscle Milk also comes in a natural product that contains no artificial sweeteners or flavors. Although Cytosport claims multiple muscle-building and recovery benefits that result from consuming Muscle Milk, these claims have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration or proven scientifically. Muscle Milk contains between 6 and 8 g of saturated fat and 310 calories per two-scoop serving. Two scoops of plain whey protein contain no fat and about 200 calories, along with an equal amount of protein.
