Phentermine is a weight-loss drug that helps you lose weight by decreasing your appetite. Phentermine is available by prescription and should only be taken with a doctor's supervision. The drug is designed to be taken for a limited time --- less than 12 weeks. It can be habit forming. According to the Mayo Clinic, phentermine is one of the most commonly prescribed drugs for weight loss.

Weight Loss

Phentermine can be an effective way to lose weight. In a 1983 study published in the "International Journal of Obesity," 34 women who took phentermine for 20 weeks lost an average of 6.4 kg, or 14.1 lbs. Ten of the women lost 10 kg or more, or more than 22 lbs.

Role of Diet and Exercise

Though taking phentermine will likely lead to weight loss without you doing anything else, simply because you won't feel like eating as much, if you take this approach you're likely to gain weight again once you stop taking the drug and your appetite returns. A better approach is to combine phentermine with a diet and exercise program. Taking phentermine will jump-start your weight loss as you begin the program. By the time you stop taking the drug you will have had time to form good diet and exercise habits that can help you sustain your weight loss.

Side Effects

Not everyone tolerates phentermine well. Some people are allergic to the drug. Others have problems with nervousness and anxiety, sleeplessness and increased blood pressure. The drug can also cause dry mouth, dizziness, blurred vision or constipation. You shouldn't take phentermine if you have a heart condition, glaucoma, high blood pressure or hyperthyroidism.

Taking Phentermine

Phentermine is sold under several different brand names in both time-release and standard tablets and capsules. Depending on the strength of the drug and the format, you may take the pills once a day in the morning, or three times a day before meals. Always follow your doctor's directions for taking the drug, and report any side effects or adverse reactions to the drug.
