1. Bipolar I Disorder
Doctors identify this type of bipolar illness by severe mood swings. Patients will go from mania to depression within a matter of minutes. It is possible for the patient to feel mania without feeling depression; however, most patients with Bipolar I disorder will experience both mania and depression. This is usually the most severe type of Bipolar. Patients have a very difficult time functioning in their everyday life activities.
2. Bipolar II Disorder
The bipolar II disorder usually consists of a period of hypomania followed by an extreme depressive episode. Hypomania consists of irritable moods without depression, an inflated attitude and rapid speech. This could be followed by an extreme, often long-lasting episode of depression. The patient will feel sad and worthless and sometimes will even consider suicide.
3. Cyclothymic Disorder
The cyclothymic disorder is a bipolar condition usually marked by mood changes that are more on the hypomania side. The patient may or may not have episodes of depression.; usually he appears to be happy and energetic on the outside, but on the inside is depressed and sad. This form of bipolar disorder is more common in women than in men and it usually develops later on during the course of the illness.
4. Bipolar-NOS
Bipolar NOS (Not Otherwise Specified) is a diagnosis that a doctor uses to diagnose patients with a bipolar disorder whose symptoms do not reflect the common types of the illness.
