Motion analysis monitors activity in a movement using video and software analysis. In motion analysis labs, technicians attach three-dimensional reflective balls and electrodes to the limbs on which the analysis takes place. Once recorded, software analyzes the images, searching for imbalances and forces taking place throughout the motion. Though analysts do in-depth studies in a medical lab with the correct software, you can conduct a leg extension analysis of your own using video.

Capture the Exercise

Step 1

Take a seat in the leg extension machine. Align your knees with the axis of rotation on the machine. Move the back of the seat to put you in an upright position. Curl your feet beneath the roller pads to begin the "up" phase.

Step 2

Film your legs as you move slowly through the up phase and back to the starting position. Recruit a partner to do the filming, or else set the camera on a tripod.

Step 3

Upload the video to your computer by connecting the USB cable from your camera to your computer. Save the video to your computer.

Software Analysis

Step 1

Upload the video from your computer to an analysis software. Many different ways exist to analyze and compare videos and the one you use depends on your software. SportsCAD Motion Analysis Program offers a selection of drawing tools to highlight and isolate troubled areas.

Step 2

Compare two videos side by side for a simple way to analyze the leg extension. Notice any discrepancies in the movement, such as poor range of motion or lack of ability to maintain form throughout the movement.

Step 3

Develop a plan to correct the discrepancies. If you have compromised form, add strength exercises that focus on the quadriceps and lower back. If you can't fully extend your legs in the video, include a hamstring flexibility program to improve your range of motion.

Step 4

Have a professional review the data for more in-depth analysis, especially if you use the analysis to treat an injury or if you don't have any prior fitness knowledge. A professional assists you in creating a training program that targets any areas of weakness.

Tips and Warnings

  • Always use correct form when performing the leg extension. Go slowly as you lift and lower the weight.
  • Consult a physician before attempting to treat an injury. Consult a professional if you have trouble understanding the data from the analysis report. Self-analysis should be used for entertainment purposes only unless you are a professional trained to handle motion analysis data. Get tested in a medical facility under physician supervision for serious musculoskeletal problems.

Things You'll Need
