Shingles, or herpes zoster, occurs when the virus that causes chickenpox becomes reactivated in your nerves years later. Shingles most often develops in those who are over 60 or have weakened immune systems. It causes a painful blistering rash, and the pain can last long after the rash has cleared up. Zostrix, a brand of pain-relieving cream, can help calm the discomfort of shingles.
Capsaicin
Zostrix's active ingredient, capsaicin, is derived from the cayenne pepper plant. Capsaicin works to reduce the sensation of pain by blocking the body's pain messenger to the brain, called substance P. In addition to shingles pain, capsaicin can help with arthritis, cluster headaches and psoriasis, according to Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center.
Zostrix
While the manufacturer of Zostrix markets the cream for arthritis and diabetic foot pain, doctors, including the American Academy of Family Physicians, recommend the cream for shingles pain as well. In addition to soothing shingles pain, Zostrix may also help reduce the risk of postherpetic neuralgia, lingering pain that can plague some shingles patients for months after the rash has cleared up. Health Care Products, a division of Hi Tech Pharmacal Co., makes Zostrix, which can be purchased in most drugstores.
Applying Zostrix
The makers of Zostrix advise applying the cream three to four times a day to achieve maximum pain relief. Substance P will be reduced over time, and it may take one to two weeks for pain relief. This relief should last for as long as Zostrix is applied consistently.
Side Effects and Warnings
You may experience a burning sensation the first few times you apply Zostrix, but this should subside after a few days of regular use, according to the makers of Zostrix. The National Institutes of Health's MedlinePlus website warns that Zostrix should only be used after shingle lesions have crusted over. In addition, Sloan-Kettering advises not to use the cream near or in eyes.
