"We all enter this world with an inexperienced immune system," says Charles Shubin, a medical doctor and associate professor of pediatrics with the University of Maryland in Baltimore. Your child's immune system is strengthened as it encounters germs, viruses and other harmful invaders. It's considered normal for your child to get about six to eight colds, flus and or infections per year, according to Parents.com. Despite this, practice several natural immunity strengtheners that can give your child a healthy boost.
Step 1
Serve your child more fruits and vegetables of a variety of colors. Doing so will ensure that he obtains a variety of phytochemicals, such as vitamin C and carotenoids. Dr. William Sears, author of "The Family Nutrition Book," asserts that these phytochemicals boost the immune system.
Step 2
Increase sleep time. A toddler needs a total of 12 to 13 hours of sleep, whereas a pre-schooler needs about 10 hours of sleep, according to Parents.com. If your child wont nap during the day, put her to bed earlier.
Step 3
Increase your child's physical activity. Do this through play, so that it's fun for the child. Increased activity can boost the amount of natural killer cells in children.
Step 4
Reduce sugar consumption. Sugar depresses the immune system by competing with vitamin C to gain entrance into the cell.
Tips and Warnings
- Have your child wash his hands before eating, after playing outside or with animals and before eating. Keep him away from second hand smoke.
- Be skeptical of all natural immunity herbs and supplements for children. Consult your child's pediatrician before giving to your child.
