The Fruit Flush Detox is a 3-day diet plan that claims to be a natural way to detox the body. The diet is designed by Jay Robb, a clinical nutritionist, who authored the "The Fruit Flush 3 Day Detox" and also founded Jay Robb protein products, Robb exclaims that eating all-natural foods such as fruit for a short-term period can help flush toxins and excess weight from the body. For long-term weight-loss success, dieters should follow a healthy diet that is occasionally interrupted with an all-fruit detox. According to MayoClinic.com however, there is little scientific validity supporting detox diets. Consult with a physician prior to initiating a detox diet.

Fruits

The Fruit Flush Diet involves eating fruit and a limited amount of other foods over a 3-day period. The initial day is referred to as a pre-flushing day followed by 2 days of fruit flushing. Fruit is eaten every couple of hours during the 2 days to keep energy levels up and prevent hunger. Robb uses fruit as the basis of the diet as they are an unprocessed food that are high in essential nutrients, vitamins and minerals needed for normal body functions, skin health and the prevention of diseases. Raw, unrefined foods improves the functioning of the body's organs and digestive system since they are not overloaded with additional toxins.

Initial Day

The first day of the Fruit Flush Detox consists of drinking a protein shake every 2 hours for 5 drinks in total. An evening meal consists of a large, raw vegetable salad with a serving of lean protein such as chicken and a healthy fat such as olive oil. Natural News.com cites these foods as grounding foods during the cleanse. Although most fruits are low in calories and rich in antioxidants, they have little to no protein or fat. Protein and healthy fats are needed for the growth and development of muscle in the body and the absorption of vitamins, respectively. They also increase satiety by stabilizing blood sugar levels.

Days Two & Three

The second and third day of the Fruit Flush Diet consists of eating fruit every 2 hours for a total of 5 fruit meals per day as well as an evening meal. EveryDiet.com cites a sample meal plan as consisting of 2 cups of cantaloupe, strawberries, 2 medium apples, 1 mango and 1 banana. The evening meals consists of another raw vegetable salad similar to the first day, but paired with 1/2 avocado and a protein drink. No evening snacking is advised.

Consideration

Although fruit is a nutritious food, many types are also high in sugar. Excessive amounts of sugar in the body, whether natural or not, can cause blood sugar levels to fluctuate and increase hunger cravings. Furthermore, excess fruit generally would not be recommended for people with sugar sensitivities, diabetics or with yeast overgrowth. Consult with a physician if you have any medical conditions prior to starting a Fruit Flush Detox. Detox diets also increase risks of negative side-effects from low calorie intakes including fatigue, dizziness and decreased focus. Weight loss incurred is typically water weight and not attributed to fat loss.
