Celebrities often need to gain or lose weight quickly for a movie role. Some might want to get rid of the extra pounds because an award show is coming and they want to look their best on the red carpet. While celebrities aren't immune to crash dieting or fad diets, the truth is that many stay in shape by a combination of healthy eating and exercise. When it's time to shed the pounds in a hurry, celebrities make quick changes for fast results.

Considerations

Most celebrities work with professionals when trying to lose weight quickly. Many use their own nutritionists and chefs to prepare calorie-appropriate meals that are still tasty and well-balanced. Others become spokespersons for major companies or try commercial weight-loss systems. For example, Marie Osmond lost 40 lbs. on Nutri-System, a food-delivery program, while actress Kristy Swanson lost 28 lbs. using Medifast, a doctor-approved liquid diet.

Exercise

Although celebrity diets can be extreme, most celebrities also put on long hours into the gym when trying to lose weight fast. In 2010, Heidi Klum shed 25 lbs. in the six weeks after the birth of her baby. She did with the help of a trainer, who helped her work out on an exercise ball. She also eliminated carbs to speed up her weight loss.

Extreme Diets

In 2010, rapper 50Cent lost 54 lbs. in just nine weeks to prepare for a movie role. He did it by working out for three hours a day and consuming a liquid diet. For her role in "Bridget Jones Diary," Renee Zellweger had to gain 30 lbs. After the film wrapped up, she lost the weight in just a few weeks by eating only tuna or cold meat with vegetables. She was also walking for three hours a day and exercising for an additional two at the gym. Extreme diets like this can be dangerous and might affect your heart if done without the supervision of a doctor or a dietitian.

Fads

Celebrities are not immune to gimmicky weight-loss solutions. Some use dieter's teas, which have a laxative effect. The weight loss is usually just water, but it results in a flat stomach --at least until you go back to eating and drinking normally. Certainly, celebrities may turn to diet pills or try extreme cleansings or colonics.
