A volleyball point spread is a way to bet on the game. Bettors use the point-spread method to select the winning team based on a certain number of points. In volleyball, unlike in many other sports, points are earned one at a time; the game's scoring system determines the point spread.
Volleyball
The game of volleyball is played on a single court. One net separates two teams. Each team tries to cause the opposing team to miss or drop the volleyball. When the ball touches the ground within the court boundaries, the team on the other side of the net receives a point. Volleyball is often played as backyard fun or beach play but also competitively in school or professional sports.
Side-Out Scoring
Volleyball uses two types of scoring. In side-out scoring, your team scores points only if it is the serving team. One person on your team serves the volleyball. Both teams volley the ball back and forth over the net until it hits the ground, inside or outside of bounds, or one team takes too many touches on it. The serving team scores if the ball drops on the opposite side of the net. If the ball drops on the serving team's side, the opposing team does not earn a point but gains the serve. Play continues until one team scores 15 points.
Rally Point
When the rally point system of scoring is used, the team on the opposite side of the net earns the point any time the ball hits the ground within bounds, or a team uses too many touches on the ball. Teams earn one point at a time until one side's score reaches 25 points. To win the game, your team has to win by at least two points. If you have 25 and the opposing team has 24, the game continues until one team has a two-point lead.
Point Spread
Volleyball games are played in sets. A team wins a match by winning three of five games. The point-spread concept is used to place a bet on a volleyball game. Bettors decide, before the game, the number of points by which they believe a team will win. For example, you may decide that your team will score 25 points to win the game, and the opposing team will score 15 points. Your point spread is 10 points. This type of betting is helpful if you bet on the losing team. You do not have to determine the number of points -- just determine which team will lose.
