Stairmaster introduced the moving stair-stepper to gyms and our butts were never the same. Working against gravity to climb stairs is a challenge to the cardiovascular system and hamstring, quadriceps, calf and gluteal muscles. Sweating a lot is normal during this exercise. With a couple of gym towels and adequate hydration, the Stairmaster workout is one of the best ways to spend time at the gym.
Stepper and Climbers
Stairmaster makes different models. The moving staircase looks just like a multi-step staircase that moves around a belt. Stair steppers have pedals for each foot that move up and down at varying resistance to simulate climbing the stairs. The faster or harder it is to make the stairs move, the more effort must be expended to step up. Programs available for heart rate, interval, random and fat-burning workouts will alter the speed of the stairs, or the resistance of the pedals.
Water
Stairmaster machines at the gym have cup holders for a water bottle or sports drink. The hand rails can get very sweaty, so place a small towel on each one for longer, intense workouts. Be sure to drink water two hours before the workout, and drink water every 10 to 15 minutes during the workout. Use a towel to clean off sweat from the control panel and stairs or pedals after the workout.
Too Much Exertion
Normal response to exercise is increased heart rate, blood pressure during a heartbeat and an increase in body core temperature. This results in the production of sweat, so hydration to maintain fluid levels in the body is important. Many people have red faces while exercising, due to the capillaries opening up with exertion. Signs of over-exertion are white, clammy face and hands, shallow breathing and a drop in blood sugar causing even more perspiration and shaking. Keep a sports drink or orange juice handy and stop exercising.
Cool Down
Climbing stairs causes blood to pool in the legs. Use a cool-down mode on the Stairmaster. The cool-down setting gradually reduces speed and resistance for one or two minutes. Keeping a grip on the hand rails, carefully step off the Stairmaster. Stretch the lower body and drink more water.
