Vitamin E is a fat-soluble vitamin that has powerful antioxidant properties. In addition, vitamin E functions in the immune system and aids in tissue repair. Vitamin E oil supplements are used to treat a variety of conditions, including dark spots on the skin. The National Institutes of Health states that vitamin E oil has shown effectiveness in the treatment of photoaging, pigmentation disorders and wound healing.

Causes of Dark Spots

Dark spots on the skin, also called liver spots, usually appear on sun-exposed areas of the body. Liver spots are flat, yellowish-brown spots that look like large freckles. The causes of liver spots include aging, chronic sun exposure, skin type and hereditary disposition. The body's metabolism changes as we age, and the liver may not be able to rid the body of all toxins, which can cause spots to occur. The most common places for liver spots are areas that have the greatest sun exposure, such as the face, back of hands, forearms, forehead and shoulders.

Benefits of Vitamin E Oil

As a supplement, vitamin E oil protects the cell membranes, particularly the skin, heart, nerves, muscles and red blood cells. Vitamin E oil may also reduce cellular aging, prevent abnormal blood clotting and inhibit skin-cancer cell growth. The recommend dietary allowance of vitamin E for healthy adults is 15 milligrams a day -- roughly 30 International Units.

Using Vitamin E Oil for Dark Spots

For treatment of dark spots on the skin, the Health 911 website recommends orally taking a 400 I.U. capsule of vitamin E oil each day and at night, puncturing another capsule and rubbing the oil directly on the spots, leaving it on overnight. Wheat-germ oil is one of the most natural forms of vitamin E. Rub the oil directly on the spots and massage it into the tissue. Take into consideration that liver spots take years to form, and it will take time to get rid of them. The time required to get rid of the spots varies with each individual.

Considerations

Liver spots in general pose no threat to your health. If the spots change in shape and color, talk to your physician immediately, as they may be a form of skin cancer. Some spots may require cryosurgery or laser therapy to be removed. Dosages of vitamin E supplements high than 1200 I.U. may interfere with your metabolism and absorption of vitamins A and K. Talk to your physician prior to using vitamin E oil for any condition.
