Hydroxycut is an over-the-counter weight loss supplement that claims to help you lose weight fast. The weight loss product contains a combination of caffeine, vitamins and various extracts that are reported to aid in weight loss. Although Hydroxycut claims to aid in weight loss, use caution when taking Hydroxycut or any other weight loss supplement, because the health effects may be detrimental.
Weight Loss Effects
Hydroxycut states that two particular studies report significant weight loss in those who used the weight loss supplement. In the first 12-week study, they claim that those who took Hydroxycut lost 20.94 lbs. when compared to the 1.70 lbs. lost in those who did not take Hydroxycut. In the second study, subjects lost 16.50 lbs., in comparison to the 1.73 lbs. lost in those who did not take Hydroxycut. These claims should be taken with skepticism because the Hydroxycut site does not provide any further information regarding the specifics of these studies.
Effects on Liver
Previously recalled Hydroxycut supplements were shown to cause significant liver damage. According to the Food and Drug Administration, 23 cases of liver damage were reported. Specifically, those taking Hydroxycut experienced jaundice, or yellowing of the skin and eyes, elevated liver enzymes, and liver damage that required a transplant. In one case, liver damage resulted in death. Further, those with reported liver damage took Hydroxycut doses at the recommended levels.
Effect on Muscle
Hydroxycut products may also negatively affect your muscles, states the FDA. Specifically, Hydroxycut may cause rhabdomyolysis, which is the rapid breakdown of muscle tissue. Muscle protein travels through the bloodstream to the kidney and may result in kidney failure. Therefore, if you are taking Hydroxycut, be aware of signs of rhabdomyolysis, which include general muscle weakness, abnormal urine color, muscle tenderness and joint pain. Immediately stop taking Hydroxycut if you notice any of these effects.
Effects on the Heart
The FDA states that taking Hydroxycut may result in serious cardiovascular effects at recommended doses. The FDA does not go into detail about the specific types of cardiovascular effects reported. However, because there are known effects on the heart, you should not take Hydroxycut if you have a history of heart disease. Further, you should immediately stop taking Hydroxycut if you experience chest pain or shortness of breath. Do not hesitate to seek medical treatment.
