Kwashiorkor is a type of malnutrition caused by a lack of protein in your diet. This condition is particularly common in parts of the world that suffer from famine or lack of food supply. However, PubMed Health reports up to 50 percent of nursing home residents in the U.S. may also suffer from reduced protein consumption. Certain dietary practices may be helpful in treating this health problem, but you should always consult your doctor first.
Kwashiorkor
Kwashiorkor is most commonly seen in developing nations that have experienced natural disasters and political turmoil. These factors can cause food shortages, which in turn can cause malnutrition. Common signs and symptoms associated with kwashiorkor include a protruding abdomen, reduced muscle mass, irritability, diarrhea and changes in both the color and texture of your hair. Children who develop this condition will fail to reach their full height and size potential.
An Appropriate Diet
An appropriate diet in treating kwashiorkor involves gradually increasing your consumption of calories and protein. In most cases, the calories consumed take the form of carbohydrates, fats and simple sugars. Increased protein consumption should occur only after other calorie types have been used to increase your energy levels. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, dried skim milk powder is often one of the first foods used in treating this health problem. A gradual introduction of other foods is an important aspect of kwashiorkor treatment.
A Helpful Food
Milk is one of the most helpful foods in treating kwashiorkor. According to nutritionist and biologist George Mateljan, author of "The World's Healthiest Foods," milk is an excellent source of low-cost, high-quality protein, helps maintain your muscle tissue and is the basis for numerous enzymes in your body. Milk has historically been used in promoting optimal bone health, and it may also be helpful in preventing atherosclerosis, or plaque accumulation in your arteries.
Considerations
Kwashiorkor is a serious health problem that commonly requires hospitalization and individualized care. Diet alone, though extremely important in treating this condition, may be insufficient in resolving the complications associated with kwashiorkor. Your doctor can counsel you on the relevant treatment strategies -- both conventional and alternative -- that may be helpful in restoring your health. Not all foods may be appropriate for you and your condition, especially in the early phases of your recovery.
