The spice turmeric gives curries its coloring and flavor. Its primary component, curcumin, appears to have medicinal properties, and turmeric has a long history of use for treating a variety of conditions, including diarrhea. Based on research and traditional use, some dosage guidelines have been established to achieve therapeutic effect in general and for conditions where diarrhea is a prevalent symptom. These dose recommendations can serve as a guide, but you should consult with a doctor well-versed in herbal medicine for guidance on an appropriate dose for your condition specifically.
General Dosing Guidelines
Look for turmeric supplements standardized to contain between 90 and 95 percent curcumin. The University of Pittsburgh Medical Center reports a typical daily dose of 400 to 600 mg three times a day, while the University of Michigan Health System (UMHS) notes dosage suggestions of 250 to 500 mg three times a day.
Dosages Used in Diarrhea-Inducing Conditions
The UMHS notes that small studies found using turmeric relieved symptoms of the inflammatory bowel diseases ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease. While these conditions are much more serious than just diarrhea, this is usually one of the most common symptoms of these conditions. Daily dosages used in research were 550 mg twice a day and 360 mg three times a day.
Medication Interactions
Medline Plus reports that turmeric might slow blood clotting, which could increase the risk of side effects associated with warfarin and other anticoagulant medications.
Other Considerations for Use
Turmeric appears to be a generally safe supplement with low risk of toxicity, but some concern exists that it could contribute to liver damage when used in large amounts over long periods of time. Using it occasionally to treat diarrhea will probably not pose any harm, but if you have liver disease or take medications that stress your liver, talk to your doctor about the possible risks of using turmeric. Do not use turmeric if you suffer from gallstones or obstruction of the bile passages.
