Properly tying the laces on goalie skates and pads ensures the player is protected from the hazards of the game. The goalie is the last line of defense against the opposing team, with some goal shots taken at almost pointblank range. A goalie needs the balance provided by a pair of properly laced skates to quickly move in front of the puck. He also needs pads properly laced to his legs and skates to protect his legs from sticks, pucks the other player's skates.
Step 1
Thread the lace through the two eyelets located at the toe area of the skates. Pull the laces up to ensure they are of equal length.
Step 2
Alternate each lace, threading the left lace into the next eyelet on the right side of the skate and the right lace through the next eyelet on the left side of the skate. Continue alternating the left and right laces into the next eyelets on each side of the skate until you reach the top of the skate.
Step 3
Pull the left lace across the front right of the skate and around your ankles twice. Pull the right lace across the front left of the skate and around your ankles twice.
Step 4
Tie the laces in a bow at the front top of the skate. Wrap the top of the skate in 1 1/2-inch sports tape to keep the skates tied and the laces secure.
Step 5
Place both leg back down onto the floor in front of you making sure the left pad is to the left and the right pad is to your right. Place the toe of your skate against the bottom of the pad.
Step 6
Lace the toe laces attached to the bottom of the pad through the opening in the blade at the toe of the skate. Pull the left toe lace through to the right side of the blade and the right toe lace through to the left side of the blade on the bottom of the boot.
Step 7
Take the toe lace on the left side of the skate and pass it through the next opening in the blade beneath the boot, pulling the lace to the right side of the skate. Repeat for the toe lace on the right side of the skate.
Step 8
Pull both the laces on the right and left side of the skate over the top of the boot. Tie the toe lace tightly around the boot.
Step 9
Kneel into both leg pads. Attach the calf straps across the back of your calves. These straps are elastic and attach with hook-and-loop fasteners or buckles. Make sure you do not pull the elastic too tight when fastening across the back of the legs.
Step 10
Attach the bottom straps on the goalie pads across the back of your ankles. Pull the straps tight and secure with hook-and-loop fasteners or buckles.
Step 11
Continue to connect the straps up the back of the pads. As you move up the pads, each strap should be slightly looser than the next, making the top strap secure, but loose enough to move and guard your goal.
