Teaching toddlers how to skate can be a challenging task. There might be many falls, but with practice, toddlers can learn how to skate and gain confidence on the slippery surface in no time. Skating is a great physical activity, allowing toddlers to have fun and stay active, developing coordination and balance along the way.

Step 1

Have the toddlers get onto the ice and hold onto the rail, encouraging them to walk. When they feel comfortable, have them let go of the rail. Have them hold their arms out in front of them to keep their balance.

Step 2

Practice falling and getting back up. Have them fall on purpose. Then teach them how to get back up after a fall by putting their hands between their ice skates, putting the toe picks into the ice and pushing themselves back up.

Step 3

Have the toddlers skate forward while marching by putting the weight of the foot over the front of their skates so they are not gliding, and lifting one foot up and then the other. You can skate backwards while holding onto their hands until they gain enough confidence to do it on their own.

Step 4

Teach the toddlers to glide using two feet once they have mastered the march. Have them pick up one foot and then the other, putting the weight toward the back of the blades so a glide occurs

Step 5

Instruct the proper way to stop. Have them push their feet apart, bend their knees and put the weight onto the center of the blades.

Tips and Warnings

  • Keep the toddlers safe by having them wear a helmet, gloves, knee pads and elbow pads.
