Staphylococcus bacteria are among the most commonly found, naturally occurring bacteria on the human body, usually causing no problems. An infection caused by one of several strains of Staphylococcus bacteria, however, may become troublesome or even life-threatening, usually requiring the use of prescription antibiotics. However, those with lowered immune resistance to infection may find some use in natural treatments to boost the immune system and prevent staph infections from occurring. As with any supplement, talk to a health care professional before use and seek medical treatment if an infection occurs.

Astragalus

Astragalus, also known as milk vetch, is an herbal supplement derived from the root of the plant. It is thought to have immune-strengthening properties by increasing the body's production of antibodies, which may help to fight a variety of infections, including those caused by Staphylococcus bacteria. It may also help to fight an infection if it occurs but should be used under the advice of a physician. Certified nutritional consultant Phyllis A. Balch, author of "The Prescription for Herbal Healing," says that astragalus should not be used for severe, acute infections due to the possibility of overstimulating the immune system.

Garlic

Garlic, one of the most common food spices, is often overlooked for its possible medicinal advantages. It is used for cardiac disorders but may have some immune-boosting and anti-infective attributes as well. According to Balch, garlic may strengthen the immune system by activating macrophages that work to destroy foreign organisms, including bacteria such as Streptococcus, which may have invaded the body. The main disadvantage of the use of garlic supplements is that certain brands may produce burping, garlic breath and indigestion. In addition, garlic may increase the activity of blood thinners such as warfarin and should only be taken with caution in those individuals.

Pomegranate

The use of pomegranate juice, fruit or supplements is touted in a 2007 study reviewed by the Huntington College of Health Sciences as a somewhat successful treatment in the prevention of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus infections. MRSA infections have received a great deal of media attention and, although rare, may sometimes turn deadly. Researchers in the study stated that daily intake of pomegranate may increase the body's resistance to staph infection by its known antioxidant activity, which has also shown some use in other infections.

Vitamins and Minerals

Vitamins A, C and E are thought to help prevent infection by acting as antioxidants and boosting the immune system. In addition, there is some evidence that those with lowered immune systems may be deficient in vitamin D and minerals such as zinc. Obtaining at least the recommended amounts of vitamins and minerals on a daily basis may be one of the best ways to strengthen the immune system and prevent infection from bacteria such as Staphylococcus, notes the Huntington College of Health Sciences. Eating a healthy diet rich in natural foods with plenty of fruits and vegetables may meet the needs of most, but supplementation with a quality multivitamin-mineral supplement may also be a good idea.
