Snorkeling can be a fun and safe activity for people of all ages. As long as kids can swim and are comfortable in the water, they can go snorkeling. Some tour providers specialize in "family snorkeling" and will know where to take you so kids can enjoy the adventure as much as the parents. If you go on your own, start near the coast, then move on to a more challenging location if you think your kids are able.
Equipment
Proper equipment is essential for a safe experience. Obtain child-size masks that fit properly and snuggly, but not so tightly that they cause pain. Help your child test for leaks by wearing the mask and putting his face in the water. If water gets in, the mask is too loose. Choose fins that are the right size so they won't come off in the water or cause discomfort.
Trip Planning
Even if they're good swimmers, kids can get confused or tired in the ocean. The ideal snorkeling place for kids is one where waters are calm and clear, so the whole family can enjoy the experience without worrying excessively about safety. A boat excursion to an offshore snorkeling site may be more appropriate for older kids, while younger kids would be better off snorkeling near the coast, just off the beach or in shallow waters.
Technique
Children need to be comfortable breathing through their mouths to snorkel properly. While older children may learn this quickly, give younger kids time to practice. Help them learn to put on the mask and breathe through their mouths. Then attach the snorkel to the mask and have them practice breathing through the tube itself. Once they're comfortable doing this on their feet, then practice in shallow water.
Safety
For safety reasons, children should never snorkel alone or without the close supervision of an adult. Keep snorkeling trips short, especially for first-time snorkelers. Tired kids are more likely to be careless in the water.. On boat excursions, ask the provider for a floating device. This is basically a large floating ring or tube, which you can hold on to when you come to the surface to adjust your mask or when you need a break.
