Your shooting ability is the most important skill for becoming a successful offensive basketball player. The ability to shoot a basketball accurately and consistently helps your team score points and results in a better winning percentage --- to say nothing of improving your statistics and perhaps winning you praise and fortune. Improving your shot, like any other skill, can be achieved by following a specific training and practice program.

Step 1

Use proper form while shooting the basketball. Proper form helps you accurately shoot the basketball on every attempt. Remember to stay balanced, with your elbow under the ball and eyes focused on the target before making a clean follow-through.

Step 2

Perform shooting drills during every practice for repetition and reinforcement of the proper shooting form. Use a partner or coach to help you take multiple shots in a short time by having them rebound for you and pass you balls. Take shots from every area of the court during the drills so you can accurately shoot from anywhere.

Step 3

Improve your strength level to increase your shooting range. An increased shooting range makes you a greater threat to the defense and allows you to make 3-pointers. Use basic strength-training equipment and perform total-body workouts with exercises such as squats, deadlifts, pushups, pullups and situps.

Step 4

Increase your vertical jumping ability by including jump-training exercises in your strength and conditioning program. Your your lower body's explosive power is key to jumping ability, which can in turn improve your shot. Sample jump-training exercises includes jumping rope or plyometric exercises such as box jumps or squat jumps.

Step 5

Take smart shots. If you take shots with a high-percentage chance of success, you stand a better chance of making those shots and thus improving your accuracy. Learn and practice your team's offensive scheme and plays so you'll know when high-percentage shots are likely to be available to you. Hours of playing and practicing with teammates will help you get accustomed to each others' habits --- making it more likely they'll know where to find you with a pass that leads to an open, high-percentage shot.
