A cheerleading bow is a hair accessory that coordinates with your uniform and helps you stand out as a performer. Choose cheerleading bows that look good but offer functionality. Avoid using flimsy ribbon or insecure hardware. Meet with other team members to make bows at home, or raise funds to purchase bows online.
Simple
According to cheerleading instructor Lucy Spain on the CosmoLearning website, the most common type of hair bow is two colorful ribbons tied together. Purchase ribbon at your local craft store. Lay one ribbon directly on top of the other, and tie them together into a box. Slip the bow through your hairband. Use your school colors, or one of your school colors and white or black.
Decorated
For a large bow, purchase a wider ribbon and puffy paint in your school's colors. Tie the ribbon into a bow, and cut a triangle into the ends to prevent fraying. Write your name, school name, mascot's name or a player's number on a bottom strand of the ribbon. Slip the ribbon into your hairband to secure it while you cheer.
Barrette
to make barrette bows, use thick ribbon from a craft store. Loop the ribbon into a bow, and sew it to maintain the bow's shape. Affix the bow to a barrette using a hot glue gun. Once the glue dries, unclasp the barrette and clip it into your ponytail holder.
Pre-made
Purchase professional-looking bows from cheerleading stores. Some vendors offer custom-designed bows using a variety of fabrics. Different styles of bows include cartwheel hair bows, pyramid bows, stunt bows, victory bows, pom-pom bows, pigtail victory bows, dagger bows, tabletop bows, bow tie bows and pinwheel bows.
