Kelp does not cause shortness of breath unless you have a severe allergic reaction to the sea vegetable. Kelp, an oceanic herb that resembles trees under the sea, is a type of seaweed that is commonly used as a dietary supplement because of its rich vitamin and nutrient content. If you develop shortness of breath while using this supplement, discontinue use and call your doctor. In rare cases, the use of kelp can lead to a severe allergic reaction.
Allergic Reaction
Shortness of breath after consuming kelp is a sign of an allergic reaction. During a food allergy soft tissues such as your sinuses, digestive system or lungs become inflamed throughout your body. You can develop an allergic reaction to any substance that you ingest. The American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology explains that you may not develop adverse reactions the first few times you ingest kelp. It can take three or more doses to trigger the allergic reaction in your body.
Cause
When you ingest kelp, your immune system will either rightly identify it as safe for consumption or mistake the proteins in the sea vegetable as intruders. According to MayoClinic.com, if it mistakes the proteins as intruders, your body will react to kelp the same way it would to an infectious organism such as a virus. Antibodies are created specifically to attack kelp proteins. These antibodies will trigger the production of other chemicals in the body that lead to inflammation and constriction of soft tissues.
Symptoms
Common symptoms associated with shortness of breath from a food allergy include swelling in your throat, coughing, a whistling sound when you breathe, chest tightness, trouble breathing and chest pain. These symptoms are the result of histamine, a chemical released during an allergic reaction that causes your airways to swell, cutting off your normal ability to inhale oxygen. Shortness of breath can be accompanied by nasal congestion, stomach pain, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, skin irritations and skin rashes.
Complications
The most common complication of an allergic reaction to kelp is anaphylaxis. Anaphylaxis is an extreme allergic reaction that affects your entire body, causing a state of shock. Shortness of breath is a common sign of anaphylaxis and develops along with facial, throat or lip swelling, hives, dizziness, lightheadedness and an increased heart rate. This condition requires emergency medical attention because it can lead to death.
