Many different types and brands of whey protein powder are available. Protein powders can be purchased in grocery stores, health food stores, nutrition stores and online. The ingredients vary between brands, depending on the purpose for the particular whey protein powder. Some powders contain whey protein and little else, a good choice for individuals who need to increase their protein intake. Other powders contain additional supplements and ingredients designed as a workout recovery product or when gaining muscle mass is desired.
Whey
The most important part of any whey protein powder is the whey. Whey protein is one of two proteins that make up cow's milk, the other is casein. Whey protein powders may contain one of three forms of whey, or a mixture of them. Whey powder is simply powder that is made by removing the fat from the whey and drying it. Whey protein concentrate is made when the lactose and other components are filtered out of the whey, leaving a concentrated form of whey. Whey protein isolate removes nearly all of the lactose and fat, leaving the most concentrated form of whey, and the one most often tolerated by lactose intolerant individuals.
Sweetener
Most whey protein powders contain some form of sweetener. Some powders use natural sweeteners such as cane sugar, stevia or other natural plant-based sweeteners. Many powders contain artificial sweeteners such as sucralose or aspartame. These sweeteners are used by people who want the benefits of the protein, but don't want the added caloric intake due to conventional sweeteners. Body builders often fall into this category.
Flavorings
Many whey protein powders are flavored with natural or artificial flavorings to make them more palatable and pleasing to the taste. Flavors available include chocolate, vanilla, banana, peanut butter, strawberry, cookies and cream and others.
Additives
Whey protein powders often contain added ingredients for stability, texture, thickness and shelf life. Additives that you may find in your whey protein powder include guar gum, soy lecithin, citric acid and artificial colorings. The more natural the whey protein powder, the fewer added ingredients the product will contain. Always check the product label for the exact ingredients in your product and consult with a doctor or nutritionist if you have any questions or concerns regarding the ingredients.
