According to the Mayo Clinic, acid reflux occurs when stomach contents flow back up the esophagus which causes a burning sensation in the chest. Reflux occurs when the lower esophageal flap is forced open. This can occur for a number of reasons, including the ingestion of foods that trigger the overproduction of acid. Eating smaller meals, staying upright after meals and avoiding the foods that trigger acid reflux can minimize symptoms.
High-Fat and Greasy Foods
High-fat and greasy foods can cause an overproduction of acid, leading to reflux, according to Jackson Siegelbaum Gastroenterology. Foods to avoid include whole-milk dairy products, fried foods of any kind and fast-food products. Jackson Siegelbaum Gastroenterology reports that creamy foods can also be high in fat and trigger acid reflux.
Acidic Foods
eMedTV.com suggests avoiding acid products as they can contribute to the production of acid and irritate the esophagus during consumption. Examples include tomato products, oranges, grapefruits, pineapple or the juices of these foods. The Mayo Clinic suggests recording foods that seem to trigger discomfort as they can be specific to each individual.
Spices
Many spices or spicy foods can irritate the damage caused by acid reflux as well as increase the symptoms of reflux. According to eMedTV.com, these can include peppermint, garlic, onion, chili, any peppers or other similar foods.
Other Foods
Other edible products that may trigger reflux, according to eMedTV.com, include chocolate, caffeinated products, alcoholic beverages, vinegar and carbonated beverages. Jackson Siegelbaum Gastroenterology reports that red wine and cooking oils can be irritating as well.
