L-cysteine is one of the supplement forms of the sulfur-containing, non-essential amino acid cysteine. Cysteine is found in proteins throughout your body and plays a role in stabilizing proteins. It may also be helpful in treating a number of conditions including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, or COPD, and influenza. Your body also uses cysteine to manufacture other substances such as glutathione and taurine, both of which may be help your body combat high blood pressure.

Glutathione

Glutathione is a molecule your body produces naturally by combining the three amino acids glycine, glutamine and cysteine. Glutathione is one of the most powerful antioxidants in your body. It helps to protect your immune system and to remove toxins from your body. According to the American Healthcare Foundation, it may also help prevent complications from high blood pressure, including heart attack, stroke and kidney failure. Keeping a consistent level of cysteine in your body is vital to the production of glutathione.

Taurine

Taurine is a non-essential amino acid which your body produces from methionine and cysteine. It is abundant in many of your body's tissues, including the brain, skeletal and cardiac muscles. Taurine is important in many of the body's functions such as regulating the pumping of your heart and regulating blood pressure. Your body must maintain a consistent level of cysteine in order to produce enough taurine.

Blood Pressure

Your blood pressure is typically recorded as two numbers, one over the other. The top number refers to systolic pressure, or the pressure in your arteries when your heart contracts. The bottom number refers to diastolic pressure, or the pressure in your arteries when your is at rest. A normal blood pressure reading is 120/80 or less. Readings greater than these numbers over a period of time indicate that you have high blood pressure, or hypertension. Your doctor may prescribe medications for high blood pressure. In addition, changes in your diet and supplements may help to lower your blood pressure. Consult your doctor before taking any supplements.

L-cysteine Supplements

L-cysteine supplements are available as a powder, and in tablet or capsule form as N-acetyl-L-cysteine. For general health and as an antioxidant, the University of Maryland Medical Center recommends a dosage of 500 mg to start. As an aid in treating high blood pressure or any other condition, you should discuss a proper dosage with your doctor. Any supplement, including L-cysteine, has potential side effects and drug interactions. Speak with a health care professional before taking L-cysteine supplements.
